APES is a university level course that follows guidelines set out by College Board. The course investigates all aspects of human interaction with our environment from ecologic, economic, philosophic and political viewpoints. There is a strong field investigation component to the course which will take place during regularly scheduled after school labs. See the course documents page for more in depth information.
The overriding issues associated with environmental degradation come from one source, too many of us. Here's a nice movie reference that indicates our biggest problem.
"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."- Agent Smith from the movie "The Matrix"
Yes, the details of the diatribe are bogus but the concept is valid. We are bipedal parasites. Perhaps the most disturbing thing is that we know what the issues are but we refuse to address them.
